Board Members

This page is under construction – please check again later

As board members we share core communal values including respect for the ʻĀina and Kupuna. We explore diverse approaches to sustainable land management and ongoing preservation of Hana’s unique way of life. This diversity is key to community representation, which makes it possible to carry out our mission to ensure that all individuals have an informed active voice in the political and economic decisions that contribute to our quality of life in Hana.

Shane Sinenci

Aloha and Welina,

It is with great honor that I address the Hana Community as a HCA board member. I am humbled to be included in a prestigious group that has worked hard and has laid the foundation to perpetuate community traditions and cultural values; to petition for community infrastructure and public works, and to work toward sustaining our natural resources for generations to come.

My mother is Gladys Roback and is from Keanae Maui. My father is Stephen Sinenci and is from Kipahulu Maui. I have 2 siblings, Sheila Roback and Stephen Jr. We grew up here in Hana. I attended the Lahainaluna High Boarding School and received my BA at the University of Oregon.

As a high school teacher with a Bachelor’s degree, my hopes are that my experiences have prepared me enough to serve my community well. I believe our kupuna are one of our greatest assets and look upon their guidance and input to herald the community into the future. I also welcome your input on any of our community issues, so we may better listen to one another and work toward speaking with one unified voice.

Mahalo,

Shane Sinenci

Barbara Ann I. Benton (Hoopai)

Barbara Ann I. Benton (Hoopai)

I became a board member because of my concern about the condition of the eroding Hana Pier. My goal is to educate and inform our community about current issues in Hana in hopes that we may have a unified voice in our resolutions.

I was born and raised in Hana, and have been a resident all my life. I graduated from the old Hana School in 1970, and raised my five children in this town. I worked for the old Hotel Hana Maui for 16 1/2 years, and am currently working for the Department of Education, since 2006.

My father was Solomon Ho‘opai and my mother Beatrice Pila, from Hana. Our families come from the Ula‘ino area of Kaeleku. I have three brothers and six sisters who were also born and raised in Hana. I have 10 grandchildren. I would like to leave the legacy of my parents for my grandchildren. This legacy is one where they can attend church services every Sunday, fish and gather for their food, and raise their own children safely. I want to protect Hana’s natural resources and environment, and it’s small-town lifestyle.
